Cat Behavior and Misinterpretations

When your cat is the dominant species in your house, it may lead to unwanted and at times, hostile situations which may cause a trip to the emergency room or the local pet hospital. Although we've always seen cats as lovable, purring and meowing fur balls, they have a grim, dark side that only a few people are aware of.  Evil behavior can always be remedied, and NOT ALL CATS are like this, but it always pays to be aware of what these are: you might actually be misinterpreting their behavior for something else entirely!

A cat grooming itself isn't always good

It is a common misconception that when cats clean themselves, they're doing so because they want to be clean. Anyway, cats are one of the cleanest animals in the world, right? Don't they like to be brushed, combed and groomed by their human counterparts? They clean after themselves and cover their waste in the litter box, right? Well, this isn't always the case, mainly because:

Reality: Although it provides a soothing and relaxing effect on your cat, the act of grooming itself actually means that it is trying to get rid of YOUR smell on ITS fur. Ever seen Mr. Tibbles clean himself up after being petted? Well, there's your answer.

Cats ignore you, deliberately

According to a study published by the University of Tokyo (one of the top universities in Japan), cats can tell if you're calling it or not, and know that it's your voice. One astounding fact is they even know their names, making them really smart animals. Whenever you call your little fur ball's name, he might not be responding – maybe because he's busy or if he just does not want to come to you yet, right?

Reality: Actually, cats IGNORE you, deliberately even if they know you're calling their name. Fact is, unlike dogs, they don't want or they just don't have a reason to respond to your calls, unless if it's mealtime. Anyway, when they do come to you, it's mainly because they think YOU deserve their attention.

Cats are antisocial animals

There are a lot of cases wherein cats harmoniously blend and make friends with the other animals in the household. Seeing a cat playfight with a dog is definitely one of the joys of life – they are also able to get along with other animals. However, you might have already known that cats are known to somehow be more dominant than dogs, as evidenced by videos wherein the latter refuses to walk in front of the former and had their beds stolen from them. Is this plainly a show of dominant behavior?

Reality: Actually, cats are not the smartest bunch out there (but still very smart), due to their antisocial behavior. Most cats are actually really bad at making friends, which is why they display dominant behavior. This isn't really a bad thing though, since this type of behavior gives cats more chances of living longer in the wild and under hostile conditions at that.

Your cat owns you

Lastly, when cats rub their whole body, especially the cheeks and their torso, it is perceived as a sign of affection. After all, who wouldn't want a soft, cuddly ball of fur rubbing itself incessantly on your skin? Actually, it isn't a sign of affection:

Reality: They are using the scent glands on their cheeks and fur to mark you. Why? Well, not because they love you (they do love you though, make no mistake), but in order to tell other cats that you've already been taking. It's basically like a wedding ring for married and seemingly single ladies.

Regardless of the facts mentioned above, don't worry, although cats display this kind of behavior, they still love you. They could still be your best friends, long time partners and household companions. That said, they still provide benefits to your health and comedy relief.
